Nero’s reignSaint Tropez, a commune in South France, is located on the French Riviera and is particularly known for its famous and wealthy guests. But before it was an exotic destination for vacationers, the town was a small port with simple roots.

Legend claims that a martyr named Saint Torpes was beheaded at Pisa during Nero’s reign. His body was set a sail in a rotten boat, along with a rooster and a dog, and it landed at the present day location of the town. Since those humble beginnings, Saint Tropez has been home to several military operations, including the Allied invasion of Southern France in 1944. It was also the summertime home-base of French existentialists.

This rich and varied history makes Saint Tropez homes some of the most alluring in Southern France. Nestled next to the water, in the lap of luxury, they’re the type of home anyone would dream of.

Ramatuelle waterfront villas

During a break from boarding school last spring I was able to travel with my friend and her family to her grandmother’s villa in the south of France. I hade never been to Europe before and I was so excited. I met her family in New York City and we boarded a flight to Paris. From Paris we took a train to Provence, then rented a car and drove to the villa. When we entered the small village where we were to stay, I wondered which of the Ramatuelle waterfront villas was theirs. When they pointed it out to me I was impressed. It seemed like more of a mansion to me then a villa.

Ramatuelle was beautiful. It was built into the hills looking out over the Bay of Pampelonne. Close to the villa was the famous beach of Pampelonne. The beach was 5-miles of glistening, white sand and crystal clear water. That summer we attended a local jazz festival. We danced all night under the
